With friends in Africa, 1999

What Lies Ahead "You gain strength, courage, and
confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.
You must do the thing you cannot do." In July, 2000, less than six years after deciding to change my life, I will attempt to climb the highest mountain in Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro, some 19,000 feet high. I am not taking the Kilimanjaro climb lightly; I began training for the climb almost a year before it will occur. I know it will be difficult, and I may not make it to the top, if I am like a majority of the climbers, who experience altitude sickness. But I am determined to give it my best shot. And I know that Ill get at least part-way up the mountain. And when, through sheer determination, I reach the highest point in Africa that I can reach, I am going to take the worst fat picture of myself that I can find, and bury it there along with all it represents of my past. And then I will find another mountain to climb. And I will keep on climbing. "The
purpose of life is to live it, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer
experience." [Home] [My
